dennis rodman was invited on cnn to discuss the trump/kimsummit. now, the reason he was involved in this interview had nothing to do with the summit itself, dennis rodman wasn’t involved in the summit, he wasn’t involved in any negotiations, however he has made several trips to north korea because kim jong-un is a fan of basketball, specifically a fan of dennis rodman, and there apparently has been enough propaganda pumped into the mind of dennis rodman that he has been convinced that kim jong-un is a wonderful person and that the people of north korea are not being brutalized or treated unfairly in any way. the people of north korea actually, genuinely love kim jong-un. now, during this interview with cuomo things kind of went off the rails and it was uncomfortable to watch, but here it is. this is a true story, and i have my people here who heard the conversation, he said things like if they can move the ships back from south korea, i would do what i have to do to listen. if you can move certain things or do certain things i will listen. my ears will be open. and i tried to do that to obama, and obama didn’t even give me the time of day. i asked him, i said i have something to say from north korea, he just brushed me off. when i said those damn things, when i went back home, i got so many death threats, i got so many death threats, and i believe in north korea, and when i went home, i couldn’t even go home, i had to hide out for 30 days.
i couldn’t even go home. but i kept my head up high, brother. i knew things were going to change, i knew it, i was the only one, i never had no one to hear me, no one to see me. but i took those bullets, i took all that, i took everything everyone came at me and i’m still standing. today is a great day for everybody, singapore, tokyo, china, everything, it’s a great day. it is a great day, it’s a historic day. i’m so happy. yeah. cuomo was kind of in a tough spot, i know he was trying to calm him down a little bit when he said it’s a great day, it’s a historic day. it’s not a great day, it might have been a historic day, there were huge concessions made by trump without letting our own allies or the pentagon know about it, that statement annoyed be but that’s beside the point — let’s talk about dennis rodman’s statements. again he is convinced that kim jong-un is a great friend of his and that he treats people fairly, he says — that’s not evident in the facts, and i’ll get to those facts in a second but i want to open this up to you guys first. this is ridiculous, and i hate, like, anything that sounds like — chris cuomo was in an uncomfortable position but he also didn’t have to do this interview because dennis rodman had nothing to do with this and didn’t add anything of news quality. this is a viral video that we all now are kind of forced to talk about. but he didn’t have to put himself in that position to then have to say it was a great day to calm his interviewee down. it feels like it’s a common cnn tactic, which is, hey, let’s have anyone on to share this perspective, right? you go back to the election, they had people come on, on a regular basis and straight up lie to their audience. what was her name, scottie nell hughes, she was the trump supporter, she would lie and she would go unchallenged oftentimes.
so you are right, there is no news value to this segment, but there wasn’t news value to many segments leading up to the general election, which is why cnn got the criticism it did for helping trump win the election, being at least one of the factors. and i think those were legitimate criticisms, and we probably should have been more brutal in our criticisms of cnn and mainstream media during that time. i can see it somewhat defensible that you have this guy on who knows both trump and kim. i mean, it seems weird that i would say that, but he does. he has a relationship with kim to the point that he was a visitor, and i’m not saying it’s a normal relationship but i’m saying okay, this guy knows both of these guys. i didn’t see the rest of the interview, the questions i would like to have had rodman answer are more pertaining to kim’s life and life in north korea, what did you see? of course you are heavily controlled, as you are in most of these dictatorial nations, with what you can see and do, and that was pretty much the way it was for rodman, so yeah, this is just theater now. and don’t get me wrong, i’m sure he got death threats, he was broiled after his meetings over there in north korea with kim. his meetings — really kim was just fanboying out having dennis rodman there, that is what was going on. this is just so much media madness, it’s crap, and it doesn’t address substantively anything that was going on. jayar? i guess the usefulness i saw in rodman coming on, he was one of these guys, the basketball ambassador, he brought like 10 guys over and they played basketball for kim jong-un because he was a huge 90s basketball fan, it seemed to soften relations, and everyone was on rodman’s back for this whole thing, he talked about that, that’s where he got the death threats from.
i saw the parallels between — i think it’s okay if you find a way to find some way into this, each leader is different, he had this love for basketball, so if you use that as may be a step — but then you still take people that know what’s going on, what has gone on, what could, how to negotiate and maybe get things to a better place, that makes sense. rodman openly admitted i don’t know anything about that part. which is fine. i’m just the ambassador. so trump in my mind is a similar ambassador, they are making niceties, having tea parties, which is cool, but he doesn’t know how to go from that step to the next. i saw them as similar types of figures, we just need someone who knows what they are doing next to do the next step, but instead we put all this trump into not rodman but trump as if he knows more than rodman does, which he doesn’t. that’s a great point, if he could have leveraged it into the next step. because otherwise all you have is an american who is being utilized as a propaganda tool for the north korean regime. so it’s not just rodman, it’s the u.s. president who is now doing this pro kim jong-un press tour. and it’s concerning because he’s doing that while simultaneously antagonizing our long-standing allies. blindsiding allies. exactly. by the way, for every action that trump takes in the present day there is a tweet that conflicts with it from years ago. so just quickly i want to go through these tweets, he tweeted in 2014 — he also tweeted in 2014 — and finally, in 2015 he said — that was after rodman had supported him in his presidential run. i mean — there is an old tweet for everything. he just goes back and forth on every issue. and by the way, again, i just want to really emphasize what happened to otto warmbier, he was the young american man who traveled to north korea, got arrested and and imprisoned for nonsense because it’s north korea, and when they returned him back to the united states he was in terrible condition and soon passed away as a result of his injuries — and so he was an american who was returned to the united states from north korea and died soon, and north korean officials made it seem as though they were the real victims of this — and you don’t brutalize, physically brutalize to the point of that this poor guy is in a vegetative state, you don’t brutalize an american to that point without a direct order from kim, it just doesn’t happen. so if we are trying to apply that rationalization it just doesn’t happen. the head of that nation, north korea, knows what is going on with the americans who have been captured and are imprisoned in north korea.
