City in Westchester County, New York State, USA, on the Hudson River, just north of the Bronx, New York City; population (2000) 196,100. Industries include food-processing and the manufacture of machinery, chemicals, clothing, and electric and electronic equipment. It is also a residential suburb of the metropolis of New York. Yonkers was a Dutch settlement from about 1650. The city is home to several attractions: the Hudson River Museum, the Sherwood House, Cross County Shopping Center, and the Yonkers Raceway.
