An Interview with Dr. Christopher Young on Periodontal Disease
Dr. Christopher Young is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Periodontal Disease.
Q. What Causes Tooth Loss?
A. There are two main reasons for tooth loss. The first is a large cavity, which causes the tooth to break or abcess. Secondly, periodontal disease commonly referred to as gum disease can also cause the loss of teeth.
Q. What Causes Periodontal Diseases?
A. Periodontal disease is caused by the accumulation of plaque over time on the tooth and under the gumline. It is the result of not having your teeth cleaned.
Q. Can Periodontal Diseases Be Prevented?
A. Removing plaque from the teeth daily and having regular cleanings and exams can help to prevent periodontal disease.
Q. How Does Plaque Attack the Gums?
A. Plaque attaches to the teeth, grows larger, irritates the gum tissue, which in turn pulls away or recedes, thus allowing more space for the plaque to grow. It’s a vicious cycle, that occurs over time and is often painless, with the only symptoms being bleeding gums. If your gums bleed when brushing and flossing it could mean you have gum disease.
Q. How Do You Stop Plaque Attacks?
A. Plaque attacks can be stopped daily bushing, flossing, and routine cleanings.
Q. How many times a day should I brush my teeth?
A. You should brush your teeth a minimum of twice daily, preferably after every meal.
Q. What kind of toothpaste should I use?
A. Any toothpaste approved by the ADA is acceptable.
However, a specific type may be reccommended by a dentist depending on your condition.
Q. How to contact Dr. Young if we have further questions?
A.
