City of Wichita

Better known as the "Air Capital of the World", Wichita is the largest city in the U.S. state of Kansas. The city is also a major aircraft manufacturing hub and cultural center. With an estimated population of 355,000, Wichita is the 50th largest city in the United States. The temperature in Wichita ranges from an average low of about 20°F in January to an average of nearly 93°F in July.


Wichita, once served as a trading center and meeting place for eleven thousand years. The first visit by European explorers was in 1541. This was when Spaniard Francisco Vasquez de Coronado was hunting for the mythical "golden" cities of Quivira. During the latter centuries, Wichita was explored by the French and Americans. It was during the 1850s and 1860s that westward expansion and financial rewards attracted the whites to settle in Wichita. It was only in 1870 that the City of Wichita was incorporated as a village. This was mainly due to the efforts of Mead, Greiffenstein and other pioneers.
