| What causes dulling and discoloration of teeth? Wichita |
Why does discoloration of teeth occur? How can we prevent or treat this condition?
It is very obvious and visible when our teeth become discolored. They become stained, yellow and sometimes get dark spots on them. These affect the appearance of our entire face and make us very self conscious. It affects the first impression we make on others who meet us for the first time. Discolored teeth lead us to become shy and reluctant to smile which in turn affects our social relationships.
Understanding how discolorations of teeth occur will help you greatly to prevent it and/or treat a condition that is already occurred. Given below are a few factors which lead to the discoloration of teeth.
What we consume – certain food and drinks contain substances which darken our teeth by staining them. Examples of such food and drink are red wine, tea, coffee and fruits such as cherries and promogaranites.
Health affecting habits – chewing tobacco and/or smoking is a strong factor in the staining of teeth of those who indulge in these habits. Another factor that leads to dulling, discoloration and even damaging of teeth is poor dental hygiene. Inadequate brushing, flossing and cleaning of the mouth, leads not only to the staining of teeth but also the possibility of developing cavities in them.
Fluoride concentration – a high concentration of fluoride in substances you use such as mouth wash, rinses and even the water you drink will lead to the discoloration of teeth.
Medications and medical treatments – certain strong medications, antibiotics or medical treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation used in the treatment of cancer, causes discoloration of the teeth due to the materials in the medications affecting the enamel of the teeth negatively.
Age and genetics – teeth naturally acquire stains, become dull and discolored through the aging process. The enamel of the teeth erodes as time goes by and the natural deeper yellow of dentin of teeth is revealed. Genetics also play a significant role in the color of people’s teeth. The enamel of the teeth of some is naturally brighter than others.
Discoloration of teeth can be treated through several procedures. Treatment that is most commonly used is bleaching, whitening, dental veneers and dental crowns in cases where the teeth are chipped and damaged as well as discolored.
Knowing the causes for the discoloration of teeth will help you make the best decision on what is most suitable for your teeth.
