| Who can perform Endodontic surgery and what are the required qualifications? Whittier |
The American Dental Association recognizes Edndodontics as one of the nice specialities of dentistry in the country. There is a voluntary process which requires certain components for a dentist to become certified as an Endodontist through the ABE certification program. Upon successful completion of an education program in Endodontics, accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association a dentist will gain Board Certification. The examinations that are required are the written examination, which test a range of areas including biochemistry, anatomy, pathology, microbiology, immunology, pharmacology, statistics, radiology, clinical endodontics and related disciplines. The case history examination requires documentation of cases from a dentist’s own practice which need to be submitted. The cases are expected to be complex and diverse and demonstrate the knowledge in expertise and skill in the full scope of the field of endodontics. The final examination is oral. A team of experts will question the endodontist about a variety of diagnosis and treatment situations. These extensive interviews will test the highest level of skill in problem solving, analysis, decision making, creativity and these evaluations will require being demonstrated.
Subsequent to the Endodontist being subject to various examinations, that is written, case history and oral and satisfied the requirements of the Board Certification process of the ABE, the Endodontist will be declared Board Certified by the Directors of ABE. The individual will then be known as a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics.
Once the Endodontisi is known as a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, the person will be considered legally eligible to perform Endodontic surgery on patients with the relevant problems such as diseased or injured roots of their teeth.
The word Endodontics comes from the Greek words “endo," which means inside and “odons” which means tooth. Endodontics or “root canal” treatment is a relatively new type of treatment for teeth with diseased or injured roots. The root refers to the tooth pulp (which contains the nerves, venules, arterioles, lymphatic and fibrous tissue) which can become diseased or injured. Subsequent to the disease or injury, without treatment the pulp tissue dies. If the dead tissue is not removed the tooth will also decay and require removal. Endodontic treatment will help to save the tooth while cleaning out the diseased or injured tooth pulp. |
