An Interview with Dr. Michael S. Papendick on Dental Implants
Dr. Michael S. Papendick is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Dental Implants.
Q. What are dental implants?
A. Dental implants are permanent artificial tooth replacements that are surgically placed into the jaw bone.
Q. What are the benefits of dental implants?
A. The benefits of dental implants are that they can replace a tooth without cutting down adjacent teeth for a fixed bridge, help stabilize a denture, or to replace congenitally missing teeth.
Q. How long does an implant last?
A. Implants can last many years if they are properly maintained by proper brushing, flossing and regular dental checkups.
Q. What are implants made of?
A. Titanium.
Q. Who is a candidate for implants?
A. A thorough evaluation is necessary to determine if a person is a candidate for implants. Most people can have implants placed, though smokers are usually poor candidates as the failure rate of dental implants is higher in smokers.
Q. How are dental implants placed?
A. How the implant is placed depends on the type of implant and the condition of the jawbone. In most cases a hole is placed into the area where the implant is being placed. The implant body is placed into this hole and the site is closed and allowed to heal. During this healing process the implant becomes anchored to the bone (osseointergration). After the healing is complete the implant is restored with a crown or attachment for denture stabilization.
Q. How long does it take?
A. Most implant cases take 3 to 6 months to complete.
Q. How to contact Dr. Papendick if we have further questions?
