Q. What is breast augmentation?
A. Breast augmentation is the enhancement of the natural breast size and shape using either silicone gel implants or saline implants.
Q. How should one prepare for breast augmentation surgery?
A. Good candidates are typically healthy individuals without major complicating health problems or issues. Preparation includes healthy diet, as well as no current signs of colds, flu like symptoms or other infections. Most important is to discuss the procedure with your plastic surgeon so you have a thorough understanding of what is involved, including the risks of the procedure.
Q. How is a breast augmentation surgery performed?
A. Breast augmentation is typically an outpatient procedure taking about 1 hour to perform. Patients undergo general anesthesia, ensuring the most safety and comfort. The implants are placed through a small incision in the crease of the breast so that the scar will not show.
Q. Who is a good candidate for breast augmentation?
A. Generally any woman 18 years or older is a candidate, barring any medical problems or health issues which may make it unsafe to undergo elective procedures. Discussion with your surgeon is the best advice to see if you are a good candidate.
Q. What type of anesthetic is used for breast augmentation surgery?
A. I have all my patients go to sleep using general anesthesia. Since this is also done by a board certified anesthesiologist, patients are guaranteed the utmost in safety and comfort with no chance of "waking up during surgery" or feeling any part of the procedure, as can happen when performed under IV sedation.
Q. What are the risks associated with breast augmentation?
A. Like any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with this procedure as well. The most important part of the surgical consultation is an explanation of the risks and potential complication. You should consult your plastic surgeon for these risks and be sure you fully understand them. Risks and complications are however rare, and the great majority of patients do well if they follow instructions.
Q. How much does breast augmentation cost?
A. Generally the cost of the procedure is around $4000 to $5000 dollars depending on whether one chooses saline implants or silicone gel implants.
