Q. What is a facelift?
A. A facelift is the surgical lifting and tightening of sagging skin and fat of the face and neck.
Q. What are the benefits of a facelift procedure?
A. A facelift is an excellent procedure to diminish the signs of aging by reducing wrinkles in the face and neck, lift jowls and sagging skin, and tighten underlying tissues. This procedure is excellent for both men and women.
Q. Are there significant risks associated with facelift surgery?
A. There are risks associated with any surgical procedure, but a facelift carries the risk of facial paralysis, hematoma or scarring.
Q. Can one expect permanent results from a facelift?
A. The best answer is drawn from an analogy ---if a patient had a twin sister, she would always appear 10 years younger. She would always age, but will have turned back the clock by up to 10 years or more.
Q. Is there a common technique for facelift procedures?
A. Over the years the techniques have advanced and evolved---and as a trained board certified facial plastic surgeon I have additional training in the anatomy of the head and neck where I can provide to my patients the added expertise of customized facelift techniques. Some of the more common techniques offered in my practice are the Mini, MACS, SMAS or S-Lift Facelift.
Q. Is a facelift performed under general anesthesia?
A. Most often it is, but sometimes it is performed under a twilight sedation – but the decision is made after I review patient history and their specific requests for anesthesia.
Q. How long before one can resume normal activities after my facelift?
A. I ask them to let healing commence and get their full attention for 2-3 weeks. They can however feel comfortable within 10-14 days to return to work. This also depends on the type of facelift, degree of tightening required and the patient comfort.
