An Interview with Dr. Bradford Prescott on Breast Reduction.

Dr. Bradford Prescott, a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Breast Reduction Surgery.

Q.    What is Breast Reduction Surgery?

A.    Breast reduction patients are undoubtedly the happiest of my patients. The improvement in self-confidence, body image, and the increased ability to exercise after reducing large breasts is remarkable. Without exception, women wish they had had the surgery performed years before they actually end up doing it, because of how much better they feel.

Q.    Who is a good candidate for a breast reduction?

A.    A good candidate is the healthy woman with a bra cup size too large for her frame, or too large for her lifestyle.

Q.    What are the benefits of breast reduction surgery?

A.    Most women who truly need a breast reduction feel so much better without the excess weight pulling down on their shoulders and back, they feel the scars are worth the improvement.

Q.    What are the risks involved of breast reduction surgery?

A.    Major risks are extremely low, for example infection, bleeding, or problems healing.  The only real consideration are the scars that are left after reducing the breast volume, and lifting the nipple back up to its normal position.  The scars are typically around the nipple, down from the nipple to the crease of the breast, and under the crease of the breast.  The scars do fade with time, but are permanent.

Q.    How much does a breast reduction cost?

A.    The cost of a breast reduction is usually paid for in part or all by insurance companies, but runs around $10,000 including the operating room and anesthesia fees.

Q.    Where do one find a doctor who performs breast reduction surgery?

A.    As is true in all plastic surgery, it takes artistic talent to make two breasts look symmetrical, and patients need to do their research to find the surgeon that can accomplish their goals.  This includes interviewing surgeons, talking with friends or other patients, and asking other physicians who they would refer to.
