| Dr. Matthew Galumbeck is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Breast Augmentation.
Q. What is breast augmentation?
A. Breast augmentation with saline or silicone implants offers women a way to improve their shape. A variety of options are available that will give you a natural appearance without an operated look.
Q. Who is a good candidate for breast augmentation?
A. Many women are concerned that their breasts are too small for their body, and say that they are embarrassed because of their breast size. They have difficulty finding clothes that fit properly. A breast augmentation can give these women the shape and proportion that they desire. Women may choose to have breast surgery at any time in their lives. We operate on women aged 18 and up.
Q. How should one prepare for breast augmentation surgery?
A. I would recommend finding a board certified plastic surgeon that specializes in breast augmentation. Most importantly, the patient should feel comfortable with the physician and his or her staff. If the procedure is to be performed at the plastic surgery facility make sure it is accredited and uses anesthesiologists to administer anesthesia.
Either saline or silicone implants are available for use today.
Options in breast augmentation include location of the incision (around the nipple, under the breast, or through the armpit). Other options include size of the implant, shape of the implant, and whether it is placed in front of or behind the pectoralis muscle. There is no one right answer for which of the options is correct. The selection of each of these options depends on what the woman is looking for as far as size and shape.
Q. How is a breast augmentation surgery performed?
A. An incision is made either under the breast, around the nipple, or through the armpit. The breast tissue and or pectoralis muscle is lifted up and a pocket or place for the implant is created. Antibiotic is usually put into the pocket followed by the implant. I usually sit the patient up at this point to make sure the breasts are symmetrical. The incisions are then closed with sutures. The sutures are removed in about 1 week.
Q. What is the recovery time for breast augmentation?
A. Most women are back to work and social activities in a day or two. They can return to the gym in about 4 or 5 days.
Q. What are the risks associated with breast augmentation?
A. Risks with breast implants include capsular contracture (hardening of the implant), rippling of the implant or implant leakage.
Q. How much does breast augmentation cost?
A. Fees vary. We charge $4900. This fee includes surgeon's fees, anesthesia, supplies, operating room, preoperative and postoperative care.
