An Interview with Dr. Adam M. Hogan on Dental Implants
Dr. Adam M. Hogan is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dental Implants.
Q. What are dental implants?
A. Dental implants are the most stable and predictably satisfying method to replace missing teeth. A dental implant is a titanium cylinder placed under the gums and in the bone. The patient is completely comfortable and the implant is inert so that the body will not reject it. When an implant integrates, Dr. Hogan can affix a functional and cosmetically pleasing tooth replacement.
Q. What are the benefits of dental implants?
A. The benefit of a dental implant is the confidence and enjoyment the patient receives from a healthy, stable and beautiful smile. Removable partial dentures and full dentures are only 40% effective at chewing. And they can present real self-confidence problems as they loosen with age. Bridges can lead to decay and replacement of the neighboring teeth. Conversely, dental implants preserve the bone and the teeth around them. The patient gains the self-confidence of a cemented tooth and the benefits of not having to put her teeth on the nightstand when she goes to bed.
Q. How long does an implant last?
A. Dental implant are the longest lasting tooth replacement system available. Approximately 90% of dental implants will be there in 20 years. Barring any serious physical or medical impairment, a dental implant will last as long as it is properly supervised by a dentist and properly maintained by the patient. This means that the patient must visit the dentist at least twice per year for examination and she must brush and floss around the implant. A dental implant will not decay but it can get bone loss due to periodontal disease. The most common reason I see for loss of a dental implant are smoking, alcoholism, uncontrolled diabetes, uncontrolled periodontitis, poor oral hygiene, and infrequent dental examination. The patient can prevent all.
Q. What are implants made of?
A. Dental implants are made of Titanium alloy. The titanium is the same metal used in other prosthetic joints and areas of the body. It has been proven to be completely inert. There has never been a documented allergy to titanium and people do not "reject" implants. They are completely safe.
Q. Who is a candidate for implants?
A. Most patients are candidates for implants and very few conditions would exclude you from having one. Some conditions that would prevent you from having implants are uncontrolled diabetes, uncontrolled thyroid disorder, metastatic cancer, radiation treatment to the jawbones, immunocompromised individuals, alcoholism, heavy smoking, periodontal disease and poor oral health compliance.
Q. How are dental implants placed?
A. Dental implants are placed by an experienced and credentialed dentist. The dentist uses local anesthesia to numb the area in the same manner he does when placing a dental filling or crown. Then a small hole is prepared in the bone and the implant is gently inserted. In many cases, sutures of the surgical site is so small that the patient won’t even have sutures. And the procedure is notably painless. My patients consistently report only taking Motrin for 1 day after surgery. None of my patients have ever reported severe pain. The procedure is really quite simple.
Q. How long does it take?
A. The procedure can take between 20 minutes to a couple of hours depending upon how many implants you are having placed.
Q. How to contact Dr. Hogan if we have further questions?
A.
