Wild Life in Asia

Asia boasts of some of the largest and thickest forests in the world. It is also home to some of the most fascinating wildlife which is as diverse as its people and cultures.

To learn in brief about the amazing wildlife in Asia, let us know some of the facts about a few unique and exotic animals found in different Asian forests and reserves as follows:

BACTRIAN CAMEL

This large mammal grows up 6 ft. in height and 12 ft. in length. In olden times it was found all over Asia, but now it is found mainly in the Gobi desert of Mongolia. It can survive in extremely hot and dry climates, eating only sparse vegetation, and can survive for long periods without water.

BENGAL TIGER

This majestic animal is found primarily in eastern India and in the Sunderban forests of Bangladesh, and also in Nepal and Myanmar. It is a nocturnal animal that hunts at night, and is extremely powerful and agile over short distances. In its natural habitats it preys upon animals such as deer, chital, neelgai, buffaloes and wild boars.

IBEX

It is a wild mountain goat, found in the national forest reserves of India and Pakistan. The ibex weighs between 90 to 120 kg, and can live up to 20 years. It male species is usually distinguished by its large, re-curved horns.

GOLDEN EAGLE

One of the most well-known birds of prey, this large and majestic bird has a wingspan of about 2 meters. They are among the largest species of eagles, under the genus Aquila. It is found in India, Pakistan and Indonesia.

BARKING DEER

It is one of the oldest known deer, and in present day, it inhabits the tropical regions of India, Sri Lanka, Southern China, Taiwan and the islands of Indonesia.

JAVAN RHINOCEROS

This gigantic and heavy animal lives in dense rainforests, and prefers places with continuous water supply. It has a poor eyesight, but a great sense of smell and hearing. It is a rare and endangered species, with only a few rhinos left in the islands of Java, and a few in Vietnam.

KOMODO DRAGON

This cold-blooded animal is about 10 ft. in length, found primarily on the Indonesia islands. It is a fast-moving animal that can catch wild pigs, deer and monkeys for its prey. They usually wait in ambush and attack the prey with their jaws.

SIAMESE FIGHTING FISH

A tiny but amazing creature, only 2.5 inches in length, its several species are found in Asia. It is commonly found in usually clear waters of lakes, ponds and calm rivers.. It feeds on small plants, worms and dead animals. When angry, it turns red and green in color.

MACAQUE

This unique black-colored, pig-tailed primate, belonging to the monkey family, is found in Southeast Asia. They live in groups, and are found in dense, evergreen forests. They like to eat fruit, insects, roots, leaves, crops etc. and look for areas with plentiful food.

SIAMANG GIBBON

Another species of unique primates, about 3 ft. in size, it is found high up in the rainforests of Malaysia and Sumatra. It moves fast by swinging from branch to branch. It has the loudest call among all species of Gibbons, and its sound can be heard from as far as 2 miles. The Gibbons are declining in numbers because of the widespread destruction of rainforests which is their natural habitat.
