Q. Why should I be concerned about skin cancer?
A. There are three main types of skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common cancer in humans and most common type of skin cancer. If left untreated, it will grow in size and can disfigure you. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common type of skin cancer. Also, left untreated especially in immune compromised patient will grow and can go to other places in your body (metastasis). Melanoma is the third most common type of skin cancer. If untreated, melanoma can go to other places in your body and you can potential die from melanoma.
Q. What is the most common type of skin cancer?
A. Basal cell carcinoma.
Q. What are the early warning signs of skin cancer?
A. A scaly rough spot on sun damaged skin is usually an indication of precancer or skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) looks like a pink or skin colored spot sometimes with some blood vessels overyling it usually on sun damaged skin. It can look like acne like spot that does not go away.
Q. How is basal cell carcinoma treated?
A. Treatment includes surgical excision, Mohs Micrographic Surgery, curettage and desiccation (scrape and burn), and sometimes a cream called Aldara. Usually for skin cancers on face or larger skin cancers, I use Mohs Micrographic Surgery.
