An Interview with Dr.Earl Hydrick on Root Canals.
Dr.Earl Hydrick is a dentist who has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Root Canals.

Q. What is root canal treatment?

A.     A root canal procedure is a fairly routine dental procedure whose purpose is to save the tooth in question. The root canal process is typically required when a tooth has become acutely inflamed or infected from very deep decay or if the internal structure of the tooth has been exposed due to trauma.

Q. What does treatment involve?

A. The actual process of performing a root canal treatment involves the removal of the inflamed or infected tissue from inside the tooth. This tissue is located within the tooth and lies in a very small space inside the root of the tooth called the canal – hence the term root canal. After the inflamed or infected tissue is removed a "root canal filling" is placed in the canal to prevent further infection.

Q. What are the signs of needing endodontic treatment?

A. The signs and symptoms most prevalent that portends the need for root canal treatment may include: (a) toothache (b) swelling (c) tenderness to chewing (d) extreme sensitivity to cold or hot.

Q. Are there alternative treatments for root canal?

A. The alternative to root canal treatment is to extract the tooth in question after which one must decide if or how they will then replace the lost tooth.

Q. How much will the procedure cost?

A. Endodontic (root canal) treatment costs is dependent on the number of "canals" within the tooth in question and would vary from about $500 to about $700.

Q. Will the tooth need any special care or additional treatment?

A. Additionally, most teeth would need a porcelain crown as follow-up treatment after the endodontic treatment is completed.

Q. How to contact Dr. Hydrick if we have further questions?
