An Interview with Dr. Yvonne Kwong on Braces

Dr. Yvonne Kwong is an orthodontist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Braces.

Q. Can one be too old for braces?

A. I have treated patients from ages 5 to 92. The younger children come because I can help modify the shape of their jaws. The older patients often have crooked or spaced teeth I can correct. A great smile is essential for good health and a self esteem. For teens it has become a rite of passage, just like learning to drive or going to college.

Q. How much does braces cost?

A. Braces range in price depending on the severity of the treatment. Come in for a complimentary consult. No doctor can give an evaluation without the actual patient. The braces includes colored, clear and invisible (Invisalign). Some people only need retainers, which are often worn at nights.

Q. When will one begin to see changes in his/her teeth after the braces are put on?

A. After braces or invisalign are placed, patients can see results as early as a week. I see my patients every two months, and the space age wires and tiny braces are more comfortable than ever.

Q. Will one need to have teeth extracted for braces?

A. The braces have come a long way since your parents had them. My braces have prescriptions in them to help create more room in mouths. However, genetics still play a role. A child with a small jaw can maximize his jaw size with orthopedic treatment and orthodontics, but this child will never grow up with a large jaw. If a someone has large teeth and a small jaw, she may need extractions of permanent teeth.

Q. How long will it take to complete the treatment?

A. With space age wires and pre-presciption braces, a teen can often finish treatment in less than 18 months. Invisalign for teens often takes less than 9 months.

Q. Can a person wear braces even though that person may have crowns and missing teeth?

A. Yes, a person can wear braces with crowns and missing teeth. In fact, orthodontists work very closely with the general dentists for prosthetic care, so that a beautiful smile with a full set of teeth is the result.

Q. How can I prevent my child from being embarrassed by wearing braces?

A. Braces have become a tradition for modern teens. In fact it is much easier to get treatment when your friends are also in treatment. Clear or invisible braces are great options for those who do not want colors. However, color can be changed every two months depending on your style, outfits or sport team.
