An Interview with Dr. Mark Habermeyer on Tooth Whitening
Dr. Mark Habermeyer is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Tooth Whitening.
Q. What is tooth whitening?
A. Zoom! in-office tooth whitening is a procedure designed to lighten the color of teeth using a combination of a hydrogen peroxide gel and a specially designed ultraviolet blue light. The ZOOM! treatment involves using the gel and lamp in conjunction with each other to produce maximum whitening results in the shortest possible time.
Q. Who may benefit from teeth whitening?
A. Any patient 16 years or older can benefit and achieve noticeable results with the ZOOM! whitening system.
Q. Who are not recommended to undergo teeth whitening?
A. It is from my experience that those with severely sensitive teeth or those with severe dental decay may not be good candidates for the ZOOM! procedure. Also the ZOOM! whitening technique is not intended to lighten artificial teeth, caps, crowns, veneers or porcelain, composite or other restorative materials. People with yellow-brown teeth frequently achieve better results than people with grey or bluish-grey teeth. There also may be a photo-reactive drug interaction with the following medications with the ZOOM! whitening system:
A patient taking any of these medications should consult with their physician BEFORE using the ZOOM! whitening system on their teeth.
Q. What does tooth whitening involve?
A. To initiate the whitening procedure, a plastic retainer is placed in a patient’s mouth to help keep it open and the soft tissues of the mouth (i.e. lips, gums, cheeks and tongue) are covered to ensure they are not exposed to either the gel or light. Lip balm (SPF rating 30+) is also applied as needed and ultraviolet glasses are used to protect the patients eyes during the procedure.
Q. How long does this take?
A. Typically we can achieve 5-8 shade changes in approximately 3-4 fifteen minute applications of the gel on patients’ teeth.
Q. How much does tooth whitening cost?
A. Currently we are offering a ZOOM! special discount for our patients for $275 which includes the in-office whitening procedure plus custom whitening trays to be used to maintain the whitening process after initial treatment.
Q. What are the side effects?
A. Probably the most common side effect is sensitive teeth immediately after the procedure is completed for up to 24 to 48 hours. This is not common but can occur depending on initial tooth sensitivity. Most patients are able to endure the whitening procedure without this complication however.
Q. How to contact Dr. Habermeyer if we have further questions?
