An Interview with Dr. Joseph Edwin Gadzia on Cosmetic Dermatology

Dr. Joseph Edwin Gadzia is an Associate Member of the American Academy of Dermatology  and Assistant Professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Cosmetic Dermatology -Latisse treatment.

Q.    What is the Latisse treatment?

A.    Latisse is a topical treatment that was originally used to treat glaucoma ( a condition of high eye pressure that can lead to blindness if untreated).  It was discovered during use that it had the side effect of increasing eyelash length and density.

Q.    Can anyone use Latisse? Is a Doctor's prescription required to purchase the same?

A.    Most people can use Latisse safely, however, if you have glaucoma or other diseases of the eye, patients should discuss Latisse treatment with their ophthalmologist.  A prescription is required to obtain Latisse.

Q.    Are there any side effects of using Latisse?

A.    Latisse can grow hair in any area where it is applied, so caution must be used to apply it only to the eyelash area.  Skin darkening has also been reported where Latisse has been applied.  This darkening may or may not be reversible.   Pigmentation of the Iris (the colored part of the eye) may occur and has been reported to be permanent.  Itching and redness of the eyelid and eye have also been reported.

Q.    When can clients expect visible results?

A.    Most people will see full results at 12-16 weeks

Q.    Are the results of using Latisse permanent? Do clients need to continue using Latisse or when can they stop applying the same?

A.    The results will last for the duration of the eyelash hair cycle which is usually 1-3 months.  Patients can stop Latisse at any time, but their eyelashes will return to baseline in 1-3 months without continued use.
