An Interview with Dr. Kamyar Nouri on Porcelain Veneers
Dr. Kamyar Nouri is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Porcelain Veneers.
Q. What are porcelain veneers?
A. Porcelain veneers are thin shells of custom made porcelain that are permanently bonded to the outer surface of the teeth. They are used to change the shape, color, and or alignment of teeth. The bond is permanent and if done right will last a very very long time. Often times with age, our teeth erode, chip, discolor, and just wear down. Veneers are a great way to get the natural beauty of teeth back.
Q. How long to dental veneers last?
A. There are no rules as to how long veneers or any other dental restoration will last.
Materials and techniques have improved drastically in dentistry and If done properly by paying careful attention to detail it is not unusual for veneers to last 15 or 20 years. One must still take care of them as their own natural teeth by getting their teeth cleaned and checked at the recommended intervals.
Q. Do dental veneers require special care?
A. No real special care. One must keep them flossed and brushed as with non veneered teeth. In some instances if a patient is known to be a grinder/clencher (someone who grinds their teeth at night), a night guard is indicated to protect the teeth and veneers.
Q. Are there alternatives to dental veneers?
A. If veneers are being done to change the color of teeth then teeth whitening could be an alternative provided that everything else is satisfactory. Other alternatives include: 1)composite veneers (which are tooth colored resin fillings that are shaped and bonded chairside by the dentist). They are not as strong as porcelain veneers and often lose their beauty in just a couple of years.2)porcelain crowns also known as caps. These essentially accomplish the same thing as the veneers but require much more tooth reduction.
Q. Do Veneers look natural?
A. If done by a skilled dentist and lab technician it is extremely difficult for a person to see the difference between veneers and natural teeth.
Q. Does the veneer protect one’ s tooth from decay?
A. The answer to this one is yes and no. The surface that is covered by the veneer will not decay, HOWEVER where the veneer meets the tooth , (around the edges of the veneer), can get decay. This is why it is very important to floss and brush regularly and to get a checkup every 6 months. On a side note there is not one restoration that completely protects the tooth from getting decay.
Q. What does a veneer cost?
A. You can expect to pay anywhere from $1200 to $2000 per tooth for very high quality veneers. The main factors that determine the price is the lab being used and how extensive the case is. The higher end of the scale is mainly for demanding individuals desiring the ultimate look and customization.
Q. How to contact Dr. Nouri if we have further questions?
