An Interview with Dr. Dana M. Coberly on Breast Augmentation
Dr. Dana M. Coberly is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Breast Augmentation.
Q. What is breast augmentation?
A. A breast augmentation is a procedure to place implants in the breast to enhance the shape and size of the breasts. Many women desire a figure that is in better proportion with their body. Often women who have had children want a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance to the breast. Breast implants can also be used to balance an uneven appearance. Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure using silicone gel or saline (salt-water)-filled implants that are placed either behind or in front of the chest muscle. The silicone gel implants are now available for women at least 22 years old and may provide a more natural result. This procedure may be combined with a mastopexy (breast lift) to enhance the rejuvenation of your breasts.
Q. How is a breast augmentation surgery performed?
A, An incision is made in one of 3 places:

fold - in the crease under your breast, hiding the scar in the fold and under your breast.

One approach may be more appropriate for your anatomy than others. The implant is placed either behind or in front of the pectoralis muscle, inflated with saline if appropriate, and the incision is closed. The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis
Q. Who is a good candidate for breast augmentation?
A. Good candidates for breast augmentation are healthy women who have not been breast feeding for at least 6 months , are non-smokers, and who have specific goals in mind for improving their body image.
Q. What type of anesthetic is used for breast augmentation surgery?
A. General anesthesia is used for the procedure.
Q. What are the risks associated with breast augmentation?
A. Breast implants are not lifetime devices, and you may need additional surgeries in the future because of complications. Breast implants may affect your ability to breast feed. Decreased sensation may occur after surgery but usually returns to normal within a few months. Bleeding and infections are rare complications associated with most surgical procedures.
Q. What is the recovery time for breast augmentation?
A. Patients should avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting (including children!) for one month after surgery.
However, most patients are able to return to normal activity within a few days.
Q. How much does breast augmentation cost?
A. Breast augmentation surgery costs vary depending upon the type of implant chosen, location of surgery, and method of implant placement. In general, breast augmentation procedures start at $3900.
