An Interview with Dr. Henry Rodgin on LASIK.
Dr. Henry Rodgin is an Optometrist and has answered some common questions that Bizymoms visitors have about LASIK.

Q.  What is LASIK?

A.  LASIK is refractive surgery that corrects myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia(farsightedness), and astigmatism(a combination of both). LASIK uses an excimer laser to ablate(vaporize) tissue from the front of the eye, the cornea. The pre-operative evaluaton checks for precription, pupil size, dry eye, and cornael thickness and mapping of the eye. These are all important in selecting the proper patients for the procedure. During the procedure a very thin flap is made in the coenea either with an instrument called a microkeartome or a laser. The flap is then lifted and the laser is applied to correct the vision. The flap is then reset and the procedure is then over .Drops are used in the eye afterwards to prevent infection, inflammation, and dry eye.

Q.  How long does the surgery take?

A.  The procedure takes about 15 minutes per eye. The actual surgical part is 5-7 minutes.

Q.  After LASIK, how soon can I return to work?

A.  Surgeries are done on Fridays, Post-Ops on Saturdays and patient is able to return to work on Monday

Q.  Will I need reading glasses after my surgery?

A.  If you are over 40, reading glasses are needed after surgery. This may not be needed if monovision is used where one eye is corrected for far vision and one eye is corrected for near vision.

Q.  How soon can I drive after the surgery?

A.  A driver is needed after the surgery but you can drive the next day.

Q.  What type of anesthesia is used during the surgery?

A.  Anesthetic drops are used in the eyes and the only sensation some patients experience is pressure.

Q.  Will I be able to have both eyes treated at the same time?

A.  Both eyes are treated at the same time.
