An Interview with Dr. Douglas Martin on Dental Implants
Dr. Douglas Martin is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dental Implants.
Q. What are dental implants?
A. Dental implants are devices designed to improve the appearance of a damaged smile by providing a foundation for other restorative dentistry. Many people think of dental implants as tooth replacements. It is, in fact, a modern device that successfully replaces the roots of your teeth. Once in place, natural looking tooth replacements are attached to it. Since 1975, I have completed over 3000 implants at my practice in Stockton. If you have been told you are not a candidate, or cannot have implants, we can solve your problems with custom implants. We have over 25 systems of implants for any implant problem and almost any budget.
Q. What are the benefits of dental implants?
A. Dental implants provide a stable foundation for tooth replacement that preserves the form of the natural teeth around it, this allows people to eat whatever they want despite missing teeth. Dental implants also preserve the bone of the jaw that preserves the contours of the face, keeping a youthful appearance. Dental Implants can be less costly than other means of restoring teeth and less damaging to adjacent teeth than other methods of tooth replacement.
Q. How long does an implant last?
A. The lifespan of an implant is the same as a natural tooth; with care, for life. Dental implants can be more durable than natural teeth.
Q. What are implants made of?
A. The primary material that dental implants are made of is medical grade titanium. Some dental implants are given a coating of a bone like material called Hydroxylapatite or HA.
Q. Who is a candidate for implants?
A. Virtually everyone is a candidate for implants. There are some factors that influence the type or difficulty of the implant system necessary to support the restorations or teeth. These factors are the amount and quality of available bone and general health considerations for surgery. If a person is healthy enough for minor surgery, we have a solution for virtually any dental condition.
Q. How are dental implants placed?
A. Dental implants are placed as an outpatient procedure in our office. We offer several different options for implant systems and each system has different requirements for time and difficulty. All dental implants require a minor surgery for the placement of the implant. This procedure often is performed with sedation so that our patients have the best possible experience while they receive care.
Q. How long does it take?
A. The procedure itself frequently is easy and completed in less than half an hour. However, some implant systems are more complicated and may take more time.
Q. How to contact Dr. Martin if we have further questions?
A.
