An Interview with Dr. Frank Rosner on Dentures

Dr. Frank Rosner is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dentures.

Q. What are dentures?

A. Dentures are man-made replacement for missing teeth,  They may replace all the teeth in an arch (complete dentures) or just a few teeth (partial dentures).  They are designed to be worn during the day and cleaned at night.

Q. Why should I use a denture adhesive?

A. A denture adhesive is used to increase the retention or comfort during wear of the denture.  Not all denture patients need an adhesive; however as we age, lose bone and gum volume, and as the denture starts to slip, adhesives add that little retention needed to make the wearer more comfortable.

Q. What types of cosmetic dentures are possible?

A. Cosmetic dentures are usually made with porcelain or plastic teeth.  Various ways to attach them to the ridge can be used to make them appear so natural that most people don’t realize you are wearing them.

Q. How long do cosmetic dentures take to make?

A. Cosmetic dentures usually take about 6-8 weeks to fabricate.

Q. What are the alternatives to cosmetic dentures?

A. Alternatives include tooth retained and or implant retained bridgework.

Q. Are dentures uncomfortable or painful to wear?

A. Dentures are usually not uncomfortable to wear once you have gone through the adjustment period.  This period of time usually involves a series of adjustment appointments that we utilize to ensure a perfect fit!

Q. What’s the difference between conventional dentures and immediate dentures?

A. The difference between conventional and immediate dentures is that with immediate dentures, the remaining natural teeth are removed the same appointment the new denture is delivered.  Because the natural teeth stay until the denture is ready to be delivered, there is no ability to "try-in" the denture before hand ( as in a conventional denture) so the patient can preview the new denture before it is fully processed.  Also because bone shrinks after natural teeth are removed, we are essentially "guessing" at how much bone would be left after the last natural teeth are removed.  This means that the denture may have to be relined or remade a lot sooner than in the conventional denture, where all of the after extraction shrinkage has been finished before we take impressions for the new denture.  However the big main advantage of the immediate denture is that the patient will not be without their natural teeth for any period of time.
