Natural Baby Skin Care

Babies are sweet, cute and cuddly. Their skin is gentle and sensitive and extra caution has to be taken to take care of their skin. Babies are easily prone to skin conditions and the situation is aggravated because they cannot tell you at the inception and you know about it only when the situation has worsened. For example a simple baby rash can turn into blisters which are very painful and uncomfortable for the baby. This is common and affects most babies but can be easily treated with simple diaper rash recipes.

There are several baby products in the market. Some of them are excellent and some of them are not very good.  When selecting skin care products for babies, it is essential to pick products which are prepared with natural ingredients or alternately you can make your own Natural Baby Skin Care product.

Diaper rash is common among babies. It is unusual redness in the diaper area which appears on a baby’s abdomen, skin folds and genitalia.  For diaper rash the following is a good natural home remedy for baby skin. Most of these ingredients can be found in grocery or health food store.

Calendula Diaper Rash Ointment

2 good handfuls calendula petals (health food store)
1 lb. coconut oil (I use Nutiva, yellow & green label)
Crispy Comfrey leaves (do not use on a pregnant woman)

Heat the coconut oil in a stainless steel pan and add the herbs. Cook both in a low fire for approximately 30 minutes; Filter the ointment into sterilized jars and let it harden.

Diaper Rash Ointments

  • 1/2 cup sweet almond oil or olive oil
  •  2-3 drops tea tree oil
  • 2-3 drops lavender oil
  • 4 Tablespoons water
Mix the ingredients and place in a sterilized jar to be used when necessary.

Calendula Ointment

Calendula is a great healing property especially for dry skin and wounds and is therefore excellent for diaper rash ointments not only for babies but even for adults.

Easy Calendula Oil Recipe

Mix one cup dried calendula with some olive oil and let it sit for a week or two and keep the jar closed tightly. Stir the mixture daily and after one or two weeks, strain the leaves out with gauze and transfer the calendula oil to small sterilized jars.

Calendula Ointment Recipe

This recipe is also an excellent diaper rash ointment. The ingredients are

1/2 cup dried calendula
1 tablespoon beeswax
8 oz. vegetable shortening

Place the beeswax and shortening in a pan and melt them. Then add the calendula petals to the hot mixture and let them steep in the mixture until it cools off. Thereafter pour into sterilized jars/bottles.

One of the best natural ingredients to keep around the house is an aloe plant. When the baby’s bottom is red, open up the leaf and apply aloe in the affected area.

A nice oatmeal bath for the baby is also excellent for diaper rash. You can just add some regular oatmeal to the baby’s bath after chopping it fine and placing into a cloth bag. Just let it steep like a tea bag.

Other Natural Baby Skin Care home remedies include:

Mix 1 drop of lavender and 1 drop of roman chamomile with some coconut oil and apply.
Breast milk applied on the affected areas is also considered to be very effective.

Extra virgin olive oil that has been steeped with fresh calendula- You can apply this oil at diaper changing time to help soothe and heal the rash.

Another common skin problem for babies are that there could scales on the baby’s scalp which is not very attractive and may also itch, but this is common during the first three months and baby eczema all of which can be treated with Natural Baby Skin Care treatment.
