An Interview with Dr. Kris McKinney on Invisalign

Dr. Kris McKinney is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Invisalign.

Q. What is an invisalign?

A.   Invisalign  is a process of straightening teeth with clear aligners worn over the teeth.   It’s an alternative to braces.

Q. How does invisalign work?

A.  The aligners are worn all day and night, except when you eat and brush/floss.  They are clear plastic, and are worn over the upper and lower teeth. They move the teeth a small amount, and you replace the aligners every 2-3 weeks to continue to straighten the teeth.

Q. What are the primary benefits of invisalign?

A.   You don’t see the braces; the aligners are nearly invisible.  With braces, you need to be careful what you eat so the braces don’t come loose.  With Invisalign, you take them out when you eat so no dietary change is necessary.

Q. How long does invisalign treatment take?

A.  Treatment can take anywhere from 6 months to 3 years, depending on the amount of tooth movement needed to straighten the teeth.

Q. How much does invisalign cost?

A.  Cost starts at $3000 for a simple case and increases with the difficulty of the case.  The more the teeth need to move, the longer the treatment time and the greater the cost.  A complex case can cost $6000.

Q. Who uses invisalign?

A.  I recommend Invisalign as an option if you are interested in a cosmetic correction, but aren’t willing to wear braces.   Braces still give the best control, and would be my first choice to fix crowded teeth or teeth with spaces between them.

Q. Are there certain dental conditions that automatically exclude someone from being an eligible patient?

A.  If you need to fix bite problems, then I would recommend braces.  They are much better at improving the bite.  For a simple cosmetic correction, Invisalign can be effective, but braces are always more predictable.  We often recommend upper ceramic (clear) braces as another preferred option.  They allow us to improve the bite, but are nearly invisible to the eye.

Q. How to contact Dr. McKinney if we have further questions?
