Musical therapy is a good way to relax and unwind when you don't want to talk to anyone or stress about life. Listening to music is therapeutic because it relaxes the sole and speaks in ways that other words cannot. It is also a healing mechanism.

Musical Therapy

For thousands of years, Music therapy has was used for medicinal cure and ancient Greek Philosophers believed that music is able to heal the body and mind. Native Americans concept of singing and chanting as part of their healing process to their beliefs had effect. However it was only during World War II that music therapy became more regulated when US Veterans Administration hospitals began treating soldiers suffering from shell and shock by using music.

The first music therapy degree program in the world was established by Michigan State University in 1944 and over 70 colleges and universities offer degree programs which are approved by the American Music Therapy Association.

Music therapy is administered for groups and individuals according to their needs. One aspect of music is listening to music, making music, writing songs and talking about lyrics. It is a therapy that can be administered in hospitals, hospices, cancer centers, at home or wherever it is possible. Its benefits have a calming and stimulating effect and does not require patients to have music abilities to benefit from music therapy.

Music Therapy is used to promote healing and may be used to promote emotional expression, relieve symptoms, promote social interaction and many other purposes. Depending on the patients needs and abilities, music therapists may use active or passive methods with patients.

It is believed that music therapy can help to reduce pain and relieve chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. It may also reduce stress. It is believed that music therapy can lower blood pressure levels, depression, rapid heart beat and sleeplessness. Some of the established health care professions have offered music therapy to promote healing and enhance quality of life. It is also used to encourage emotional expression, relieve symptoms, promote social interaction and for other purposes. There is also an opinion that music therapy may enhance the health care of pediatric oncology patients.

The value of music therapy on the mind, body and spirit of adults and children have been evidenced in scientific studies. Some studies indicate that music therapy has really decreased the overall intensity of the patients pain, when used with pain relieving drugs and may also help reduce the need for pain killers in some patients. One study found that in hospice patients, music therapy improved relaxation, comfort and pain control. Another study found that there was improvement in the quality of life of cancer patients who experience pain, while it declined in those patients who did not receive music therapy.

Music therapists work with a variety of symptoms such as physical, psychological and emotional and the effects are definitely positive.
