Musical Instruments

Musical instrument is a device to make music. Every musical instrument produces sound, but is categorized according to the specific musical purpose it is meant for.

Classical musical instruments are brass, percussion, woodwinds and strings.

Of the brass instruments, trumpet is perhaps the most famous. It is an instrument where the sound is produced by vibration of the lips as the player blows into a tubular. The other brass instruments are trombone, tuba, trumpet, baritone, french horn, euphonium, flugelhorn, mellophone, sousaphone, saxhorn, cornet, sackbut, bazooka, cornett, bugle, serpent, ophicleide and the keyed trumpet and the brass trumpet.

A Woodwind instrument produces sound when the player blows air against an edge of, or opening in the instrument, which makes the air to vibrate within a resonator. What is more common is that the player blows against a thin piece of wood called a reed. Some of the woodwind instruments are bansuri, dizi, flute, fife, piccolo, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, pipe organ, panpipes, bass clarinet and other instruments in the oboe family.

The others in the woodwind family are the free reed aerophones, which are the Chinese shêng, Laotian khene, Japanese sho, and the European instruments: harmonica, harmonium and reed organ, bayan, accordion, concertina, and bandoneón, are also in the woodwind famil

Strings instrument is a musical instrument which produces sound by means of vibrating strings. The more popular string instruments are violin, viola, bass, cello, mandolin, sitar, guitar, ukulele, harp and the banjo.

A percussion instrument produces sound by hitting an object with an implement, shaken, rubbed, scraped or by any other action and makes the object vibrate. Some of the percussion instruments are xylophone, snare, triangle and bass drums, cymbals and anything that can be hit, and even a desk could be a percussion instrument.

Chordophones such as the cello or piano, produce sound by vibrating strings, that are grouped into zithers, keyboard chordophones, harps, lyres, lutes and bowed chordophones.

Aerophones are the pipe organ or oboe, produce sound by vibration of columns of air, and are grouped into free aerophones, organs, flutes, reedpipes and lip-vibrated aerophones.

Idiophones like the xylophone and rattle, produce sound by vibrating themselves. They are grouped into concussion, percussion, split, shaken, scraped and plucked idiophones.

Membranophones such as drums or kazooos produce sound by vibrating membranes, They are grouped into predrum membranophones, tubular drums, kettledrums, friction idiophones, friction drugs and mirlitons.

Drums is yet another instrument where sound is produced by vibrating the drum sets by the player.
