About book by its cover
The phrase never judge a book by its cover is true for actual books and also for situations in life. One cannot judge how the book will be by only looking at the title and the cover design. The entire story needs to be read in order to gain a good understanding of the book. |

Never judge a book by its cover |
This statement is true to some extent only. The covers of a plenty of books are printed to catch the eye of the readers. In most of the books for children the cover pages carry a lot of pictures and are colorful, which attract the children. However, the books for the adults, religious books and books with philosophical themes have less elaborated covers or some times the covers are very simple.
However, there are some special colors which indicate the type of the books. As an example, in the books with mysteries or murder the covers generally have a black background and love stories very often have covers in blue color. Some of these books are printed in large font, since the type is meant for the people with poor eyesight.
The poetry books are generally with floral covers. But from the cover alone it is not possible to say that it is a poetry book. There may be fiction and non fiction books with floral design covers. Sometimes, the book covers carry skulls. However, the contents of these books do not always reveal mysteries, ghost themes or any danger.
In the early 20th century, the cover pages did not have pictures. Most of these books had hard covers and were bound. The books with even stories for the children carried simply the name of the book and the author's name only. However, in the latter part of the century the book publishers and the cover designers understood that the people were attracted by the cover pages, since they cannot read the whole book to get an idea of the theme before purchasing the book.
Today, there are readers or buyers of the books who do not buy by looking at the cover page only. They go through the first few pages. This gives a fair knowledge of the story or the theme of the book. Mostly the novel writer publishers who produce books for profit use elaborated covers. As an example, they use half-naked female photographs or drawings to make the buyers attract to it. Perhaps, the cover could even carry a scene which is not salient to the plot of the story.
The eastern religious books on almost every religion did not carry colorful covers until the end of the 20th century. However, presently the covers of some books on religions represent the theme of it. As an example if it is a Buddhist book; there could be a picture of the Buddha or some 'Bo' leaves with the wheel of Dharma could be seen on the cover. Similar indications are there in the covers of other religious books too, other than Islam. Thus, we cannot judge a book by the cover alone, but in some instances from the cover we can guess the type of the book. |
