An Interview with Dr. Marvin A. Borsand on Breast Reduction

Dr. Marvin A. Borsand is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Breast Reduction.

Q. What is breast reduction surgery?

A. It is a procedure to reduce the volume of breast tissue in order to relieve the symptoms that women have that are associated with hypertrophy of the breast tissue.  The symptoms that are generally included are rashes beneath the breast, bra strap deformities, pain associated in the chest and shoulders, and frequently headaches in the back of the neck.  The breast reduction surgery can be performed in one of two ways, open or closed.  Open means essentially cutting and sawing of the breast tissue and skin and close means liposuction to reduce the size and volume of the breast tissue.

Q. Who is a good candidate for breast reduction?

A. Surely any woman who is having either physical or emotional concerns regarding the size of her breast would be a good candidate.

Q. What are the benefits of breast reduction surgery?

A. Dorsal cervical myalgia means the pain associated in the back of the neck, as well as in the shoulder region can generally be markedly reduced or relieved completely and intertrigonal dermatitis, the rash beneath the breast that occurs because of too much moisture can be treated and generally cured. Making the breasts more proportionate to the rest of the figure may give her a better feeling about herself.

Q. What are the risks involved with breast reduction surgery?

A. Any surgery has certainly the usual risks of infection, collection of blood, and anesthetic risks that could be severe and possible blood clots from another part of the body going to the heart or lungs.  Having said those specific to breast reduction surgery would be loss of sensation of the nipple-areolar complex, possible loss of skin, asymmetry, hypertrophy of thickened scars.  Those are the main risks of breast reduction surgery.

Q. What you want to expect after breast reduction surgery?

A. By liposuction one should see about 50% reduction immediately and then probably 10 to 20% further reduction by four months.  With the open technique of cutting and sawing, one would expect still some swelling in the upper pole, pain associated with the procedure which is usually mild to moderate that is rarely a bit severe.  The other expectation is that they should have a chance to review what the scars look like prior to the surgery, so that they are not startled by what they see when they initially see the incisions because they do go around the areola, as well as up and down and sometimes beneath the breast as well.

Q. How much does breast reduction cost?

A. Better check .  I think it is about $7000to $8000 which include the surgeon’s fee, anesthesia, facility, garments and followup visits.

Q. What type of scarring she want to expect?

A. The technique that we use is called an extended Lejour procedure which means so much of a lollypop or circular around the areola and a line up and down and occasionally the incision partially underneath the breast which is hidden in the crease of the breast fold.  The scar is generally cosmetically pleasing with _____07:59 and special glues and tapes that were used to avoid stitches or sutures on the skin.

Q. How to contact Dr. Borsand for further questions?
