Q. What is breast augmentation?
A. Breast augmentation is an excellent procedure with very high patient satisfaction. Breasts are enlarged using implants. This is an outpatient procedure that takes about an hour.
Q. How should one prepare for breast augmentation surgery?
A. There is really few things that one has to do to prepare for breast enlargement. The patient should refrain from smoking several weeks before surgery and refrain from taking medications that cause increased bleeding. These include aspirin, Motrin, and certain herbs.
Q. How is a breast augmentation surgery performed?
A. Breast implants are placed inside the breast. I prefer placing implants under the pectoral muscle as this affords the patients several advantages. The implants could be either filled with salt water or silicone gel. The FDA released its ban on silicone breast implants three years ago because there was no correlation seen between leaking implants and health issues.

A. Breast enlargement is ideal for women who have small breasts or those who lost breast tissue after childbirth or weight loss
Q. What type of anesthetic is used for breast augmentation surgery?
A. Most breast augmentation are performed under general anesthesia but some surgeons do it under local sedation. I prefer general anesthesia as this ensures that patients pectoral muscle is fully relaxed during the procedure. This minimizes post operative discomfort.
Q. What are the risks associated with breast augmentation?
A. Risks associated with this procedure is minimum. They include bleeding and infection during the first few weeks. Implant displacement and hardening of implants which is called capsular contracture may occur several months to years after surgery.
Q. What is the recovery time for breast augmentation?
A. Recovery time for breast augmentation is very short. Most women are back to normal in days. We ask patients to refrain from strenuous activities and heavy lifting for 6 weeks. |
