What is a phising scam?

What is a phishing scam?

A Phishing scam is where a scammer creates a website posing as a legitimate bank, other financial institution or an online shopping site to obtain details such as bank account numbers, credit card details, PIN codes and personal identification information to engage in bank, credit card and identity frauds.

Scammers engaging in Phishing scams create a website that is identical to the real website of the bank, including the logo, graphics and test items as well. The fake websites also carry fake contact numbers and details as compared to the original website but when you call the fake telephone number you do get an answer which is similar to the genuine answering service.

Phishing scams are sent mostly by email and very rarely through the post.

Phishing scammers usually use the excuse that they need to verify or update your existing records and hence the request for all your details. Mostly these emails are sent out toward the end or the beginning of a year or financial year.

Phishing scams are targeted at getting the customers instant or quick response with words such as 'please update your records for security purposes' or 'if you don't update your records before the close of the day your account will be closed or 'Please verify your personal details so that we can update our records'.

Here are a few tips to help you identify a phishing scam,

- Emails are never sent out by legitimate banks or online shipping sites to verify your personal details.

- Banks or shopping sited don't expect you to give out your details at the last minute, therefore be aware when your personal details are being requested via email, this could be a scam.

- The emails sent out are generic and email never used to send it directly to you.

- A hyper link to the genuine bank account is given with the words 'click here to go to your account directly'

You can install the latest software that is available, to block emails that are sent out for phishing scams. This is the only way you can protect yourself as certain emails contain viruses that are installed into your computer the moment you open them, and they extract your personal information. Installing the latest anti-virus and spam ware can also be installed to minimise loss.

The best way to make others aware, help them and help yourself is to report the scam. You can either report it to The Anti-Phishing Work Group (APWG), an international organisation that tracks phishing scams. You can also forward a copy of the phishing scam email to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
