How to spot check scams

How to spot cheque scams

There are several scams involving cheques, and they are much easier to carry out than other scams. This is because when someone issues a cheque to you, you think it will automatically convert to money once you deposit it into the bank. This is not so as these cheques could bounce due to non availability of funds or other irregularities. You don't know this at the time but the scammer who gives you a dud or a fake cheque knows it !.

The other scam that involves cheques is where you are sent a cheque in payment for products that you are selling online. The cheques are usually for a large amount, an amount more than what you should actually get. The person then asks you to refund the excess immediately and before the cheque is realized you send the excess payment only to be told that the cheque has bounced a few days later. There are other scams that involve cheques, where you have to pay an upfront charge so that the company will send you the cheque. The usual excuse these scammers use to lure you into the scam is that you have won some price money or that a long lost relative or friend has left you a part of their inheritance. Never send out an advance payment for funds you will get in the future via cheque. Chances are the money you spend as processing fee is not worth if it is for the fake cheque you get.

Here are a few tips on how to spot cheque scams.

- Never make refunds until your cheque has been realized and the funds are safely sitting in your personal account.

- Never send any processing fee for cheque deposits.

- You should be aware that you are liable for fake cheques that you issue or deposit

- Remember other than trading there is no legitimate reason that anyone will give you a cheque.

- Never accept cheques that are sent to you more than the actual price.

- The fake cheques look like the real cheques so look out.

- Even if the fake cheque is deposited and the bank finds out even after money was withdrawn that it was a fake cheque you are liable to pay the bank. That's the reason you should be aware of cheque scams, you are ultimately responsible.

- Never advertise request for money or investment partners, scammers prey on such people, especially with cheque scams.

- There are many variations to cheque scams making it easier for people to fall for scams.
