Dr. Sean S Behnam is a  Member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Hair transplant.

Q. How does hair transplantation work?

A. Hair Transplant is a simple outpatient procedure where permanent hairs are relocated to areas of hair loss. Recipient areas may be the scalp, eyebrows, sideburns or frontal hairline.

Q. Who is a good candidate for hair transplant surgery?

A. For females the following is a list of conditions that constitutes a good candidate for hair transplant.
  • Females with frontal hair loss with minimum hair loss in the back of the scalp,
  • Females whose hair loss is caused by traction commonly seen with braids, ponytails or hairstyles,
  • Females with loss of sideburns after facelift surgery,
  • Females with scarring in front of or back of the ear after facelift surgery,
  • Females without eyebrows or who have plucked off their eyebrows who wish to have thicker eyebrows.

Q. What are the new hair restoration treatments available for men and women?

A. Latest treatments for hair loss include a new method of hair transplantation.  This is called Follicular unit extraction (FUE).  I am dedicated to performing this most advanced hair transplant technique.  FUE is a minimally invasive hair transplant procedure that eliminates the need for making a 20cm cut on the back of the scalp. Very few physicians can perform this procedure because FUE requires extensive training, expertise and dedication.  I have invested heavily in technology to make this new technique possible.  My clinic  is one of the few centers to acquire the Follicular Unit Extraction device, which allows more hair transplant candidates to take advantage of this new procedure.

Benefits of Follicular Unit Extraction include:
  • No strip removal of hair from back of scalp,
  • No linear scar on the scalp,
  • No punch or mini-grafts,
  • No sutures or staples,
  • Better aesthetic outcome on the scalp,
  • Reduced downtime after surgery,
  • Faster healing, Quicker return to daily activities,
  • Less pain and complications and Less surgical risks.

Q. Do you provide free consultations and do clients need to bring any information with them?

A. Yes. I provide free consultation to individuals who are concerned about their hair loss.  The consultation is with myself, not a medical assistant or a nurse.  I spend about an hour going through various aspects of hair loss. I perform a thorough hair loss evaluation to ensure that there are no underlying medical etiologies that may be contributing to their hair loss. I perform hair loss mapping, educate about hair loss prevention as well as provide surgical and non-surgical treatment options for hair loss.

Q. What information is needed for clients to bring with them?

A. The necessary information mainly includes medications.  There are lists of medications that may exacerbate underlying hair loss.

Q. Should medications be taken after hair surgery?

A. No long term medication is necessary to be taken after hair transplant surgery.  For men who desire to have a better outcome of their hair transplant, I do recommend Propecia. Females also benefit from using topical Rogaine for the first few months after the procedure.

Q. Do clients need to use a bandage after surgery?

A. Minimal to no bandage is required after surgery.  A small dressing is applied for 20 minutes after the procedure which can be removed upon leaving the office. Downtime is also very minimal, limited to a few days after the procedure. Most patients return to work the next day to a few days after the procedure.

Q. When can clients expect to see results?

A. Patients begin seeing results within 6-8 months after a hair transplant.  Full results are expected within 12-15 months after a hair transplant.

Q. What is one most important factor upon deciding a hair transplant specialist?

A. One of the most important factors is the amount of time the physician spends with their patients. Direct physician interaction is critical through every stage of the process.  This includes the initial consultation, during the procedure and after the procedure.  In my case, I conduct the initial consultation myself (no counselors are used), spend an hour evaluating the cause of hair loss, doing a skin scalp mapping to determine the amount of hair required, educate as well as provide all the surgical and non-surgical treatment options.  One week prior to the procedure, I personally call the patient and speak with him or her, addressing any concern that the patient may have.  On the day of the procedure, I only schedule one case per day so that I can spend the entire day with my one patient.  I am involved in every step of the procedure.  After the procedure, my patients have my direct cell phone number so that they can call me at any time of day if they have any concerns or questions.

Q. What are the latest diagnostic methods for hair loss?

A. The latest diagnostic method for hair loss is genetic testing.  This is a very simple outpatient procedure where a quick swab of the cheek is performed and sent to the lab.  Genetic testing allows us to customize a treatment plan based on one's own genetics.  We proudly offer this breakthrough genetic test.
