An Interview with Dr. Judy Chen on Dental Implants

Dr. Judy Chen is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dental Implants.

Q. What are dental implants?

A. Dental implants are artificial tooth replacements that act and look like natural teeth.  They provide a durable solution to replace a lost tooth, or teeth, due to injury or disease.  The implant itself looks like a screw and acts as the root of the tooth that holds the crown or tooth above the gums.

Q. What are the benefits of dental implants?

A. By permanently replacing missing teeth, dental implants not only improve the esthetics of your smile, they improve how your teeth function.  They dramatically improve your health, quality of life, and self-esteem.  Dental implants are actually more tooth saving than a traditional bridge, since implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support.  In a bridge, the teeth surrounding the site of the missing teeth must be shaved down or reduced to fit for crowns.   Implants are a far more conservative and comfortable alternative.

Q. How long do implants last?

A. There is no guarantee that an implant procedure will be successful but dental implants are among the most successful procedures in dentistry.   Dental implants have shown a 90 percent success rate and long-term studies continue to show improving success.  If you are a non-smoker with good oral hygiene habits, dental implants should last for a lifetime.

Q. What are implants made of?

A. Dental Implants are made out of titanium and could be structurally integrated into the jawbone. Studies have shown that titanium is the most biocompatible material with the human body, which means that the implant has a high predictability of long-term acceptance and success.

Q. Who is a candidate for implants?

A. Dental implant candidates must be in good general oral health and need to have one or more missing teeth replaced due to injury or periodontal disease replaced.  Healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant is a must.  Candidates have to be committed to daily brushing and flossing with regular dental check-ups.

Q. How are dental implants placed?

A.  A precise space is made in the jawbone where the titanium dental implant will be fitted.  Once placed, a protective cover is then placed over implant to let the bone integrate with the implant and heal.

Q. How long does it take?

A. Implants are typically placed in a single sitting but require a period of osseointegration or bone fusion to the implant.  This period of anchor and healing takes anywhere from three to six months. Once the implant has anchored with the jawbone, the procedure can be completed with the placement of a crown.  And a healthy happy smile can be seen.
