Science Summer Camps in San Francisco ~ Sheena West

In a less enlightened era, a surefire recipe for social suicide involved attending science summer camps. San Francisco kids, however, beg to be sent to these camps today.  Maybe it’s because society has been more accepting of geeks and nerds as of late, or maybe teachers have found ways to make science more exciting for children. In any case, consider these exciting science programs for your budding little Einsteins this summer.

Celsius and Beyond

Unravel the secrets of the universe and the human body at Celsius and Beyond, a specialty school that teaches science using engaging, hands-on activities. Their summer camp is designed by leading experts in the scientific community and allows your kids to indulge their curiosity sans the pressure of competition and good grades.  Choose from one of these week-long programs, or choose all of them to keep your child busy throughout the summer.

Your kids don’t have to be in high school to take a close look at what’s inside living bodies. The Dissecting program will take kids to a laboratory at UCSF Parnassus, where they can zoom in on the insides of starfish, mice, sheep, and other living organisms.  If your child’s interests lie outside of the planet, take them to a journey through outer space at the Astronomy program. Campers will take trips to the planetarium and view far-off stars, explore the secrets of the moon, and experience what it’s like to be an astronaut.  As for kids who are fascinated by technology and robotics, they might enjoy building their own robot at Kinderbot Fun. Their finished creations get to compete with other robots in soccer, capture-the-flag, and other real life challenges.

These are just some of the fun learning adventures offered by Celsius and Beyond. To learn more, visit their website http://www.celsiusandbeyond.com or call the school at 415.221.6161.

Camp Edmo

It’s never too early to introduce the littlest member of the family to the magical world of science. Tickle their imagination at Camp Edmo, an art and science summer program for kids in pre-K until fourth grade. At Camp Edmo, your child will enjoy hands-on science, tech, and art activities designed by museums and experts. One of the most popular activities is the Incredible Edibles, probably because it’s the only time kids are allowed to play with their food! These food-centric activities teach kids about nutrition and inspire art projects using everyday edibles.  Another popular activity is Magic and Medieval Times, where campers use scientific principles to make plastic objects shrink and make entire eggs fit through narrow bottlenecks, as well as design their own magic wand and castle.  Meanwhile, older kids in second grade up to fourth grade get the chance to dabble in animation, stop-motion animation, and comic book writing at Camp Edmo’s Art and Tech program.

Don’t let your kids miss out on these fun summer activities! Camp Edmo is located at 1278 Indiana Street Suite 101 San Francisco, CA 94107. Learn more by visiting the website http://www.campedmo.org or calling 877.993.MORE.

These San Francisco summer camps will help your little Einsteins be all that they can be!
