An Interview with Dr. Daryl Hoffman on Breast Augmentation.

Dr. Daryl Hoffman is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Breast Augmentation.

Q. What is Breast Augmentation?

A. Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure in which a woman’s breasts are enlarged through the surgical placement of breast implants, resulting in increased fullness and projection of the breasts. It is done to add breast volume or to restore volume after weight reduction or pregnancy, or in some cases, to achieve better symmetry when breasts are disproportionate in size and shape. Implants may also be used for reconstructive purposes to restore a breast that is lost due to mastectomy or other reasons.

Q. How is a breast augmentation surgery performed?

A. Breast augmentation is usually performed under general anesthesia though sometimes it can be done under local anesthesia. Incisions are made under the arm or nipple or breast or umbilicus.  A space is made beneath the breast or the pectoral muscle so that the implant can be put in.  Saline or silicone implants are used.  Size is decided ahead of time.  The result is evaluated sitting up in the operating room while the patient is still asleep.  Adjustments are made until the desired result is obtained.

Q. What are the possible immediate post-operative effects in breast augmentation surgery?

A. Usually, the chest feels very tight after surgery.  Post-operative complications are possible, as with any surgery.  However, serious complications are rare.

Q. What type of anesthetic is used for breast augmentation surgery?

A. General Anesthesia is usually used, especially with sub muscular procedures

Q. What are the risks associated with breast augmentation?

A. Serious post-operative risks are unusual.  As with any surgery, bleeding, infection, and pain are possible.

Q. What is the recovery time for breast augmentation?

A. You may return to light activity within a day or two after surgery.  Light activity is advised for the first two weeks. Initial wound healing may take 5-10 days at which time any sutures will be removed. Healing should be more fully completed within 4-6 weeks at which time restrictions are removed.  It may take months for the implants to assume their completely settled position.

Q. How much does breast augmentation cost?

A. Fees range from $6000 to $8500 depending on the type of implants and the time required. Silicone implants are more expensive and are at the higher end of the range.
