An Interview with Dr. Mihir Parikh on LASIK.

Dr. Mihir Parikh is an Ophthalmologist and has answered some common questions that Bizymoms visitors have about LASIK.

Q.  What is LASIK?

A.  LASIK eye surgery is a laser procedure that changes the shape of the cornea and allows patients to see better without needing to depend on glasses so much.

Q.  How long does the surgery take?

A.  The complete surgery takes approximately 7 minutes per eye.

Q.  How soon after LASIK can I return to work?

A.  You may return to work when your vision is functional for the work you do.  Typically the vision is restored within 12 hours so many patients can drive without corrective lenses in less than one day.  The quality of vision will continue to improve over the first one week.  Many patients do their surgery on Fridays, rest over the weekend and return to work Monday.  However, we motivate patients to return to work the next day and others elect to take a mini vacation to fully recuperate before going back.

Q.  Will I need reading glasses after my surgery?

A.  The need for reading glasses after surgery depend on the age of the patient, the type of surgery performed and if the patient has any other eye conditions.  Generally, patients need reading glasses after surgery if they are over 45 years old.  However if such a patient chooses to have "monovision" it is entirely possible they will not need reading glasses or only in certain conditions.  Usually visual outcomes and expectations are discussed in detail with the patient in their pre operative evaluation.

Q.  How soon after the surgery can I drive?

A.  My typical answer to this question is when you feel comfortable.  For the most part, patients are driving the following day after their Lasik procedure.  Some patients may take a little longer of course but not very often.

Q.  What type of anesthesia is used during the surgery?

A.  I use "topical" anesthesia and "vocal" anesthesia.  I talk all patients thru the procedure as it is being done so they remain calm and focused. I feel this helps outcomes tremendously as well as reduces the "fear" factor.

Q.  Will I be able to have both eyes treated at the same time?

A.  I let the patient choose--whichever they feel more comfortable.  Patients most commonly choose to have both eyes done at the same time. However if they choose one eye at time then that is completely fine as well.

Q.  How can we contact Dr. Parikh if we have further questions?

A.  I may be contacted by calling NVISION San Diego office at (858) 558-6000 or email (mihir.parikh@nvisioncenters.com).  I have very experienced staffs, many who have worked with me or in the Lasik industry for over 10 years.  Thus often times they can answer the questions as well.
