An Interview with Dr. Allison Stocker on Cosmetic Dermatology

Dr. Allison Stocker is a member of American Academy of Dermatology. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Cosmetic Dermatology.

Q.    What causes spider veins on face and legs?

A.    I'll focus on spider veins on the face because they have different causes and are treated differently than veins on the legs.

The most common causes of spider veins (telangiestasia) on the face are rosacea and sun damage. Other contributing factors include hormonal changes, hereditary factors, and trauma.

Q.    How does laser treatment help treat facial spider veins?

A.    Laser and pulsed light treatments target the red color in the vessels and cause them to shrink or disappear. Laser or pulsed light treatments are preferred methods for these small veins; whereas, varicose veins (medium to large veins), found especially in legs, are best treated with sclerotherapy or other methods.

Q.    How many treatments are required to effectively treat facial spider veins?

A.    We usually recommend a series of 5 treatments.

Q.    Are there any side effects of using laser treatments for facial spider veins?

A.    Temporary redness and swelling may occur. Rarely skin discoloration or scarring may occur.

Q.    Are the effects permanent?

A.    The vessels can recur over time, so maintenance treatments may be needed.
