An Interview with Dr. David Duke on Porcelain Veneers

Dr. David Duke is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Porcelain Veneers.

Q. What are porcelain veneers?

A. Porcelain Veneers are thin layers of porcelain placed over the front surface of the teeth. Many patients want veneers to protect a damaged or decayed tooth, or to improve the aesthetics of a tooth.

Q. How long do dental veneers last?

A. The life of porcelain veneers can decrease with poor oral health, grinding, and such habits as chewing on ice. The average life of a porcelain veneer is 15-20 years.

Q. Do dental veneers require special care?

A. Dental Veneers are bonded and cemented to the teeth; they function exactly like your original teeth and can be brushed and flossed as usual.

Q. Are there alternatives to dental veneers?

A. There are alternatives to dental veneers. In my practice, we often use Invisalign to close small spaces and correct crooked teeth. The Invisalign trays can be used as whitening trays as well, so we are often able to straighten and whiten teeth at the same time.

Another option available is called Dental Bonding. These are cosmetic fillings placed on the front teeth. We match the fillings to the color of the teeth and are able to close any spaces between teeth. Dental bonding does not last as long as dental veneers. Usually they last only 5 to 7 years with good care.

Q. Do Veneers look natural?

A. Veneers can be made to look as natural as you’d like. I use the best Dental Labs to make our veneers and crowns. There are many styles, shapes, and colors to choose from when making veneers. Our labs make a preliminary mold of the shape and color of the veneers so that our patients can request changes to have the perfect finished product they desire.

Q. Does the veneer protect one’s tooth from decay?

A. Veneers only cover the front surface of the teeth. The lingual, or back surface, of the tooth is the natural, untouched tooth that may be subject to decay. Thus, if a patient does not have adequate oral health habits such as flossing and brushing twice per day, they may have the chance of decay on a tooth with a Dental Veneer.

Q. How much does veneer cost?

A. Veneers can be made from various types and combinations of porcelain and resin materials.  The prices of veneers vary; this is largely based upon the quality of the material the veneers are made of. On average, the price range is $800 - $1200 per veneer.

Q. How to contact Dr. Duke if we have further questions?
