Founded by Mormon leader Brigham Young, the capital of Utah has taken strides to move beyond its conservative image. Salt Lake City has become a progressive economic center and vital tourist destination. It was also named site of the 2002 Winter Olympics. The lake for which it's named is the second-largest salt-water lake in the world. And with the snow-capped Wasatch Mountains looming in the backdrop, outdoor recreation is abundant year-round. Alta and Snowbird have great skiing, and Wasatch State Park offers golf, hiking, and Nordic sports. In town, visitors can take in a Jazz game at the Delta Center or catch the Mormon Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square.
