Q.    What is Breast Augmentation?


A.    Usually it involves placement of a silicone or saline implant under the breast to enlarge the breast.  There are newer techniques coming that inolve using fat grafting of the patients own fat to augment the breast.


Q.    How is a breast augmentation surgery performed?


A.    The patient is asleep, the operation takes just over an hour, and involves a small incision in the fold under the breast to insert the implant.


Q.    Who is a good candidate for breast augmentation?


A.    Almost any woman who wishes to enlarge her breast size.


Q.    What type of anesthetic is used for breast augmentation surgery?


A.    General Anesthesia.  It is just as safe as twilight anesthesia, more comfortable for the patient, and involves a board certified anesthesiologist to provide the anesthesia.  That way the surgeon can concentrate on doing the surgery.


Q.    What are the risks associated with breast augmentation?


A.    Surgical risks include the rare complications involving infections, bleeding, or extremely rare anesthesia complications.  Implant-related complications involve ruptured or leaking implants, malposition, scarring around the implant leading to firmness, and the need to perform more surgery in the future.


Q.    What is the recovery time for breast augmentation?


A.    It takes several weeks for most patients to be back to completely normal activity.


Q.    How much does breast augmentation cost?


A.    Average price is somewhere between $6000 and $7000.
