An Interview with Dr. Trenton R. Young on Dental Implants
Dr. Trenton R. Young is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dental Implants.
Q. What are dental implants?
A. Dental implants are titanium cylinders that can be used to replace missing teeth. They are surgically placed into the upper or lower jaw bone by a dentist or oral surgeon. Crowns are attached to the implants creating a very natural look and can enhance or restore a patient’s smile and function.
Q. What are the benefits of dental implants?
A. Dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth and also provide a fixed solution instead of removable partials or complete dentures. Implants provide excellent support and stability for these dental appliances.
Q. How long does an implant last?
A. That depends on a couple of factors; one, of course, is how well you take care of them. You need to brush and floss - keep them clean, to prevent inflammation around the implants. Keeping regular visits with your dentist and hygienist is very important. At each check up they can evaluate your overall oral health. If a patient smokes it has been shown that they are statistically two and a half times more likely to have an implant fail than a non-smoker.
We do know that the first patient to have implants was in 1965 and the implants are still functional today dental implants are very strong, stable, and durable and will last many years, but on occasion, they will have to be re-tightened or replaced due to normal wear.
Q. What are implants made of?
A. Implants are usually made of titanium which is very compatible to the body.
Q. Who is a candidate for implants?
A. There are many variables to be considered before placing an implant:
-the patient must be healthy
-healing abilities affected by a disease may affect the successfulness of an implant
-a proper diagnosis must be made before an implant can be placed
-placement and technique is specific to each individual candidate
-to further prevent complications, the implant(s) must be treated properly by the patient and the dentist
-heavy smoking and drinking may affect the successfulness of an implant
Q. How are dental implants placed?
A. The process of getting implants requires a number of visits over several months. X-rays and impressions (molds) are taken of the jaw and teeth to determine bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant. While the area is numb, the implant will be surgically placed into the bone and allowed to heal and integrate itself onto the bone for up to six months. Depending on the type of implant, a second surgery may be required in order to place the "post" that will hold the artificial tooth in place. With other implants the post and anchor are already attached and placed at the same time.
After a healing period, the artificial teeth are securely attached to the implant, providing excellent stability and comfort to the patient. Good oral hygiene, eating habits, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new implant.
Q. How long does it take?
A. The procedure varies on the patient’s needs. Some implants can be placed in 45 min. The implant heals for about 6 months to allow the bone to integrate with the post that is placed. Then we can make the crown to replace the missing tooth.
Q. How to contact Dr. Young if we have further questions?
