Dr. Monica Crooks is a Dentist who has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Dental Implants.
Q. What are dental implants?
A. A dental implant replaces a missing tooth. The implant portion actually replaces the missing root, and after the implant is successfully accepted and integrated with the patient’s bone, a crown is secured onto the implant with a titanium screw.
Q. What are the benefits of dental implants?
A. The benefit of an implant is that it is secure so you can chew without worrying about the stability of the replacement tooth. Unlike bridge technology, it does not require the reduction of adjacent tooth structure. The implant experience is the closest to having your lost tooth back.
Q. How long does an implant last?
A. Unlike hip, knee and other medical implants, dental implants can last indefinitely. The expectation is that they will last a lifetime without need for replacement. However, that said, there are always exceptions. There is no way to predict or guarantee results when dealing with healing and the human body.
Q. What are implants made of?
A. Implants are made of titanium.
Q. Who is a candidate for implants?
A. Anyone of reasonable medical health with adequate bone who is missing a tooth or teeth, should be a candidate for implants.
Q. How are dental implants placed?
A. The implant itself is placed surgically, usually by either an oral surgeon or a perio surgeon. After it has healed, the crown portion is fabricated under the direction of and placed by a general dentist.
Q. How long does it take?
A. The entire process takes about 6 – 9 months.
Q. How to contact Dr. Crooks if we have further questions?
