Q. What is liposuction?

A. Liposuction is a procedure where a small metal tube is inserted under the skin though small incisions to remove fatty deposits.  Liposuction can be performed in many locations on the body.  The scars are very small and easy to hide in natural creases and folds like the belly button.  The process works by removing excess fat and scarring the fat that remains so that it shrinks down giving a thinner appearance to the body area that is worked on.

Q. Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

A. The best candidate for liposuction is a person who is not very overweight and just has a few "problem" areas on their body that they want to remove fat from.  Liposuction is a common procedure that I perform as part of a "mommy makeover" where we restore many of the changes that happen to a women’s body with pregnancy like stubborn tummy and upper thigh fat.

Q. What are the risks associated with liposuction surgery?

A. The risks of liposuction are small.  It is an operation so there are small but inherent risks like infection and bleeding following surgery.  Rest and extra help is needed during recovery to minimize these risks. 

Q. What technique will the surgeon use to perform the liposuction?

A. Several liposuction techniques exist.  I like to use a liposuction cannula with an ultrasonic tip.  This special cannula breaks up fat and tightens the skin more than a regular liposuction cannula.  Patients should be cautious of physicians who are not trained plastic surgeons performing procedures like SMART liposuction in their offices.  Liposuction is a surgical procedure and is best left to plastic surgeons who have hospital privileges to perform liposuction.  Such privileges would never be granted to physicians who do not have formal training in plastic surgery.  Make sure to ask your surgeon if they have hospital privileges to perform the procedures you want.

Q. How long is the recovery period?

A. It takes a few days to recover then in many cases a compression garment needs to be worn for 4-6 weeks.  The results are best seen about 3-4 months after the procedure when the swelling process is fully complete.

Q. Are the results of liposuction permanent?

A. Liposuction permanently removes fat cells and scars many of the cells that remain.  Fat cells that are removed will not regrow, but the cells that remain can get larger if you gain additional weight.

Q. How much does liposuction surgery cost?

A. Liposuction prices depend on the number of body areas chosen.  It starts at about $3,000 which includes the surgical fees as well as hospital and anesthesia.
