Dr. Jonathan Chan is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Tooth Whitening.
Q. What is tooth whitening?
A. Teeth whitening is a very common method of removing extrinsic stains from teeth through a variety of oxidizing agents.
Q. Who may benefit from teeth whitening?
A. People who have any form of external staining on their teeth would benefit from teeth whitening. Coffee, wine, tobacco habits, sodas, and variety of foods can cause staining. Even medication can affect the appearance of teeth. Teeth whitening is a quick and simple way for those who desire a brighter smile.
Q. Who are not recommended to undergo teeth whitening?
A. Teeth whitening is generally not recommended to individuals with a lot of internal discoloration in their teeth (for example - tetracycline staining). The first method involves construction of custom fit trays that will be used to deliver the whitening solution to the teeth. Molds are taken of the patient’s teeth and then trays are made accordingly. Trays are then worn for a period of time each day for a week to two weeks. The second method involves using "strips". Strips used to deliver the solution versus using a tray delivery method. Thirdly, in office whitening (also known as one hour whitening or power bleaching) can done. That involves delivering a stronger whitening solution in a controlled office environment. The whitening process is boosted by a specific chemical reaction or enhanced by using a light source.
Q. How long does this take?
A. In office whitening takes approximately an hour. Take home methods generally involve wearing the trays for a specified period of time for about a week or two. Of course, individual results vary, and we must take each person’s situation into consideration.
