An Interview with Dr. Mark H Holt on Braces
Dr. Mark H Holt is an orthodontist and has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Braces.
Q. Can one be too old for braces?
A. A surprising percentage of our patients are adults. In fact, 25 percent of all orthodontic patients are adults. Health, happiness and self-esteem are vitally important to adults. No patient is "too old" to wear braces! We have Invisalign patients in their seventies.
Q. How much do braces cost?
A. The cost of orthodontic treatment will depend on many factors, including the severity of the problem, its complexity and length of treatment. Most kits are $4,500 - $6,000.
Q. When will one begin to see changes in his/her teeth after the braces are put on?
A. Every patient’s treatment is different. Some patients will notice a difference in just a few weeks others within a few months.
Q. Will one need to have teeth extracted for braces?
A. Removing teeth is sometimes required to achieve the best orthodontic result. Straight teeth and a balanced facial profile are the goal of orthodontics. However, because new technology has provided advanced orthodontic procedures, removing teeth is not usually necessary for orthodontic treatment.
Q. How long will it take to complete the treatment?
A. Everyone’s treatment time varies, however, using the latest technology and glued in devices helps to decrease the time in braces. State of the art braces, super elastic titanium wires and springs help in obtaining an ideal result. This technology also allows patients to come in every 8-10 weeks rather than every 4 weeks. We use glued in devices whenever possible to reduce treatment time and to save parents and patients the time and frustration of losing an orthodontic device. Some of the devices can be used instead of a headgear. Shortening treatment time does not effect the outcome but does decrease the chance of root resorption or decalcification of the teeth. Most treatments are around 18 months.
Q. Can a person wear braces even though that person may have crowns and missing teeth?
A. Yes. A tooth with a crown will move just like a tooth with a simple filling. When teeth are missing, orthodontic treatment will aid in the alignment of the remaining teeth.
Q. How can I prevent my child from being embarrassed by wearing braces?
A. We offer clear braces or Invisalign teen for patients that are concerned with the appearance of the metal brackets.
Q. How to contact Dr. Holt if we have further questions?
A.
