An Interview with Dr. Michael J Teuscher on Dental Implants.

Dr. Michael J Teuscher is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Dental Implants.

Q.    What are dental implants?

A.    Dental implants are titanium cylinders that are used to replace the roots of teeth that have been lost.  They can support a single crown, multiple crowns or bridges, or a denture.

Q.    What are the benefits of dental implants?

A.    Implants have several benefits:
    a.       Preservation of the jaw bone.
    b.      Fixed in place replacement of missing teeth.
    c.       Firm retention of removable appliances that otherwise would be very loose fitting.
    d.      Improved chewing.
    e.      Improved esthetics.

Q.    How long does an implant last?

A.    Research is suggesting that if an implant is successfully integrated in the bone for 24 months, there is a very good chance that the implant will remain in place for a lifetime.  I have been restoring implants for 23 years, and we are seeing outstanding results in almost all of our cases.  It seems like if there is a problem, it occurs early.  That being said our success rates are in the high 90%, which is excellent in health systems.  Most complications occur above the implant, and are therefore easy to manage.

Q.    What are implants made of?

A.    The best implant systems all use titanium as the base.

Q.    Who is a candidate for implants?

A.    There are VERY few patients that would not be candidates for implants.  There are just a few medical conditions that can be an issue, and we need to have enough bone or be able to create enough bone to hold the fixture in place.

Q.    How are dental implants placed?

A.    Implants are placed either in an existing extraction site, or by tapping a narrow socket into the jaw.

Q.    How long does it take?

A.    The procedure depends on how much is being done, but generally in an hour or less.
