An Interview with Dr. Lance Timmerman on Periodontal Disease

Dr. Lance Timmerman is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Periodontal Disease.

Q. What Causes Tooth Loss?

A. Many factors can contribute to tooth loss.  Trauma to a tooth can break them beyond repair, decay can eat them away beyond saving, or loss of supporting bone can lead to them falling out.  These are the most common reasons.

Q. What Causes Periodontal Diseases?

A. Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection.  This infection leads to irreversible loss of bone around teeth and is never cured (only controlled or maintained).

Q. Can Periodontal Diseases Be Prevented?

A. Prevention of periodontal disease is from routine dental hygiene.  Brushing twice per day, flossing daily, oral rinses, tongue cleansing and other similar activities can help prevent the disease.  However, some strains of bacteria are more virulent, so seeing the dentist in their recommended frequency is important (some people need to come in 4 times per year or more...)

Q. How Does Plaque Attack the Gums?

A. Plaque creates what is called a "biofilm."   This sticky mat-like material can create chronic inflammation, which destroys bone and allows bacteria into the bloodstream (leading to other systemic problems, like heart attacks and strokes).

Q. How Do You Stop Plaque Attacks?

A. The best defense is a good offense.  Brush daily!

Q. How many times a day should I brush my teeth?

A. Most people only need two times per day, but some people may need more.

Q. What kind of toothpaste should I use?

A. Whichever kind will get you to brush!  Many formulas exist, but if they taste terrible, compliance is low.

Q. How to contact Dr. Timmerman  if we have further questions?
