An Interview with Dr. Kevin Kay on Dentures
Dr. Kevin Kay is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Dentures.
Q. What are dentures?
A. Dentures are a removable plastic prosthesis that replaces all the teeth and gums when they cannot be saved due to advanced gum disease or injury.
Q. Why should I use a denture adhesive?
A. A well fitting denture should not require denture adhesive. A loose denture indicates a problem and should be evaluated by a dentist.
Q. What types of cosmetic dentures are possible?
A. All dentures are cosmetic, in that they can dramatically improve one’s appearance. A temporary removable cosmetic prosthesis can be fabricated to go over your existing teeth. One such product being marketed is called Snap-On-Smile. Perhaps this is what you mean by "cosmetic dentures?"
Q. How long do cosmetic dentures take to make?
A. Dentures take anywhere from 3 weeks to several months to make, depending on the situation.
Q. What are the alternatives to cosmetic dentures?
A. Remember, a denture means you have lost all your teeth due to severe disease or trauma, so the alternative is to take good care of them and see your dentist regularly!
Q. Are dentures uncomfortable or painful to wear?
A. A well fitting denture should be comfortable. However, situations arise when they aren’t. Your dentist can help determine the cause of the discomfort and discuss treatment options with you.
Q. What’s the difference between conventional dentures and immediate dentures?
A. Immediate dentures are when you still have teeth but they aren’t savable and a denture is needed. In this case, the denture is made before the teeth are removed and the day they are extracted your new denture is placed. This way you’re never without teeth. If you already have a denture and it needs to be replaced, this is a conventional denture.
Q. How to contact Dr. Kay if we have further questions?
