Dr. Joseph J. Eberle is a dentist and has answered some of the common questions Bizymoms visitors have about Periodontal Disease.

Q. What Causes Tooth Loss?

A. Tooth loss is caused by neglect, poor diet, smoking, drugs, alcohol and in some cases is hereditary. Systemic diseases, such as diabetes, blood cell disorders, HIV infections can lower the body’s resistance to infection, therefore causing more severe problems. Medications can also have a extreme effect on your oral health.

Q. What Causes Periodontal Diseases?

A. Several warning signs can signal periodontal disease. The mouth is filled with countless bacteria, periodontal disease begins with certain bacteria in plaque that forms on the teeth and gums and causes inflammation.  The resulting inflammation, which may be painless can damage the attachment of the gums and bone to the teeth.

Q. Can Periodontal Diseases Be Prevented?

A. Periodontal disease can be prevented by good oral hygiene- brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. Visit your dentist regularly; Professional cleanings are the only way to remove tartar, which traps bacteria along the gum line.

Q. How Does Plaque Attack the Gums? How Do You Stop Plaque Attacks?

A. Plaque will attack the gums and cause swelling and soreness around the teeth, Gums will become mildly sore and may be red and puffy and may bleed during brushing.  To prevent plaque, you need to brush and floss regularly. If you do not remove plaque by brushing and flossing, it can build up and infect your gums, teeth and bone that support them. This can cause gums that have pulled away from your teeth, bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth, changes in the way your teeth fit together when you bite.

Q. How many times a day should I brush my teeth?

A. You should brush your teeth regularly after every meal.  If you eat 5 times a day then you should brush 5 times a day.

Q. What kind of toothpaste should I use?

A.  There are all kinds of toothpaste,  paste for sensitivity, whitening, toothpaste with fluoride, gels. You should contact your dentist to have regular dental cleanings and they may recommend the kind that is suited for your special needs.
